The Judgment of God

The judgment of God (called cherem in Hebrew) is translated “totally devoted to God” or “utterly destroyed.” In modern English, we might say “damned.” Only such total judgment could remove the pollution of sin so that God’s creation would once again honor him.

The Bible provides several examples of God’s cherem falling on sinful people:

• Genesis 6 – 8 — God flooded the entire earth to wash away a perverse human race.

• Genesis 19 — God poured fire and brimstone on the evil cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

• Numbers 16 — Because they defied him, God destroyed Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and their followers, as well as all of their family members and belongings.

The conquest of Canaan was a step in God’s plan to reclaim his world. Only the total destruction of the sinful Canaanites would make the land fit for his people to serve him and enable them to be a blessing to all nations so that the world would know that Yahweh is God. To bring about his judgment and restoration, God chose as his instruments the same creatures who had sinned against him.
